WHAT IS BOTOX?
HOW DOES BOTOX WORK?
WHAT DOES BOTOX TREAT?
BOTOX is an FDA-approved injectable product that reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles in the forehead, between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and more. It’s similar to its cousin, Dysport®, which works in the same way.
When we form certain facial expressions (raising our eyebrows, frowning, or squinting, for example), lines naturally appear on our faces. Over time, these lines become etched into our skin and stick around even when our expressions are neutral.
BOTOX blocks the release of a substance called acetylcholine, interrupting the signals telling specific muscles to contract. This allows the overlying skin to relax and creates a smoother, younger-looking appearance.
BOTOX relaxes wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions over time. A few of the most common treatment areas include:
-
Glabellar lines between the eyebrows
-
Horizontal forehead lines
-
Crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes
It may also create a slimmer face shape and relieve TMJ symptoms when injected into the masseter (jaw) muscle.
If you have deeper folds or wrinkles on your face, you may get better results with dermal fillers. These injectable gels add volume below the skin to lift and smooth nasolabial folds and marionette lines, and add youthful volume where you need it. Many people combine these with BOTOX for an even more rejuvenating result.
FAQ: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND DYSPORT?
One of the main differences between Dysport and Botox is the areas in which they are approved for use. Dysport is primarily used for correcting glabellar lines, the frown lines between your eyebrows. Dysport is a great option for those who have moderate to severe frown lines. Botox, on the other hand, can be used to treat many different types of wrinkles, including crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and laugh lines. If you have mild to moderate wrinkles, Botox may be a better option for you.
Some people have experienced quicker results with Dysport, noticing a reduction in wrinkles in only 2-3 days. The results of Botox generally take around a week to appear, but both injectables reveal their peak results at around 2 weeks. When looking at how long the results last, both Dysport and Botox last around 3-4 months. A single unit of Botox has about 3 times the potency of a unit of Dysport. This doesn’t mean that Botox works better, but rather that more Dysport is needed to achieve the same effect. As a trade-off, the price of a Dysport unit is less than that of a Botox unit, so you’ll spend about the same amount of money to achieve similar results.
